Xi’an Fangsuo Commune is a 5000 sq m bookstore and library in Shaanxi, China.
Visitors are taken on an immersive experience that begins with curated commercial exhibition spaces illuminated by artificial light wells, extending to a family restaurant and children’s area and ends with a central “book tower.” The book tower is constructed of floor-to-ceiling shelves displayed in concentric rings like a tree. The exterior of the building is inspired by China’s barbicans and gated communities.
