The Smritivan Earthquake Museum was envisioned as a living museum after the devastating 2001 Gujarat earthquake. The quake claimed over 12000 lives & caused unprecedented widespread destruction around Kutch district & the region. The client, Gujarat State Disaster Management Authority commissioned the Smritivan Earthquake Museum and Memorial across 470 acres, as a public space to commemorate the lives lost for posterity & reconcile with uncertainties of nature. Encompassing 10,000 sq mt of gallery space, Smritivan would be India’s largest memorial museum. The brief aimed at creating an ecologically sustainable, historically profound, & sensorial enriching experience for the individual & collective cultural enhancement of future generations.
