Elkus Manfredi Architects has been working with Children’s National Hospital, one of the country’s foremost pediatric and clinical research institutions, to develop an 11.85-acre research and clinical campus at the former Walter Reed Army Medical Center site. Phase 1 of the project is complete, which included the renovation of four existing buildings for a total of 150,000 square feet of research and translational science, a 30,000-square-foot outpatient clinic, a 300 seat auditorium, and a 970-space parking structure. Future phases will bring on another 160,000 square feet of research space in the existing building, and approved zoning allows for another 700,000 square feet of research and clinical space on four building lots. The renovated Children’s National Research & Innovation Campus creates an inspiring research environment while significantly increasing Children’s National’s capacity for pediatric care.
