io Pendant – Capsule Collection Volume 01
All project descriptions are provided by SBID Awards entrants.
Derived from the Greek term Ionic, io Pendant takes inspiration from the fluted detailing of ancient Greek pillars. Using the unique production process of gravity fed glass extrusion, io Pendant takes a circular 2D design and extrudes the glass downwards to create a perfectly ribbed cylindrical form.
The luminaire’s components are discreetly hidden, making the glass the true hero of the product, allowing the light to subtly reflect and refract. Handcrafted to the highest quality with no detail spared, the delicacy of the glass adds a real sense of luxury to any interior space.
Developed by Astro’s Designer Riley Sanders, when creating the io he combined his love of materials and fascination of manufacturing processes to explore new and innovative techniques.
Comentary from Riley Sanders, Designer of io Pendant, Astro
“The Capsule Collection gave us the platform to liberate our creative process and reinforce Astro’s design led approach. Remaining true to Astro’s design ethos – Good Design Demands Simplicity, with the io Pendant, we pared back each part of the design process to remove unnecessary components and keep the design as simple and minimal as possible. The concept revolves around the unique scalloped finish of the glass in one elongated form, it’s the magic of the piece. That combined with the ambient beam of light achieves a design with interest from all angles.”
Designed exclusively in Britain, io Pendant forms part of Astro’s exclusive Capsule Collection Volume 01.
Focusing on precision and restraint, Capsule Collection presents three iconic designs that transcend seasons and trends by being functional yet beautiful.
